I think Jonah Goldberg makes a great point about the futility of the leftist approach to regulating business in this essay. But I'd like to add one more point.
If you catch your spouse having an affair, who is it that has really betrayed you? Your spouse, or their lover? Your spouse is the one who stood up in front of God and everybody and pledged fidelity. Their lover may lack ethics, but they never swore any oaths to you, either.
Leftists demonize corporations for the corruption of government. But isn't it those politicians, who asked for our trust, who promised to look out for our interests, who raised their hand and took the oath of office, that have betrayed us? Corporations may have wealth, but government has been entrusted with power, which is by far the greater responsibility. It is government who should be most excoriated for violating that trust.
Don't mistake this for simply a Republican problem either. When the slops start to flow, all the pigs belly up to the trough.
The road to wisdom? Well it's plain
and simple to express:
Err, and err,
and err again,
but less, and less, and less.
-Piet Hein
In a nutshell: if we wish to remain the Land of the Free,™ freedom must come first.
